Some places legally need safety glass. Doors, side panels and anything glazed below 800 mm have to be toughened or laminated to BS 6206. If a quote is suspiciously cheap, that is usually why.
A misted unit does not mean a new window. Nine times out of ten the frame is fine and only the sealed unit has failed. Replacing the glass costs a fraction of replacing the window.
A chip repair is usually free on your policy. Most comprehensive cover pays for it with no excess, and it stops the crack running across the screen. Worth doing the week it happens.
