What to check before you buy anywhere

Three things that cost nothing and settle most arguments.

Look up the MOT history yourself. It is free on gov.uk from the registration alone, and it shows every advisory and every mileage reading. If the mileage jumps about, walk away.
Ask to see the HPI check. It says whether there is finance outstanding, whether the car has been written off and whether it is recorded stolen. Ours is on the file with the car.
Ask what the warranty actually covers. Twelve months means nothing on its own. Ask for the list of what is included, what is excluded and what the claim limit is, in writing.
